Is Maintaining a Lean Physique Difficult?

Getting lean is easy…. Well on paper it is anyway….


If you eat less + burn more calories slowly over time fat will come off!

Obviously, there is a lot more to do with it then just this but to be honest being in a negative energy balance is our main priority when we it comes to getting rid of some unwanted fat.


Anyway… back to the question of ‘is maintaining a lean physique hard’.


The first couple of times you do a fat loss phase or comp, the ‘re bound’ will by far be the hardest part… But over time you will become far more efficient at how you handle this process!


It will be hard to maintain a lean physique if you try and stay around 7% BF%, instead I would aim to go up to around 10-12% which is plenty lean enough anyway :P.

As a coach it is best to get there as soon as possible… none of this 12-week reversing out as this will only lead to a bad relationship with food and hey all diet phases need to come to an end.


Once you’re at 10% + then all you need to do is find your appropriate ‘weekly maintenance’ the key here is ‘weekly’.


But why not daily?


If we get too caught up in the daily I find with both myself and clients it can lead to a bunch of negatives:


- Stress

- A constant thought of food

- Poor adherence


So, we look laterally at ‘weekly calories’. I prefer to look at the week as a whole as this way we can over eat some days and under eat other days depending on work and social life.


To maintain my current physique, I simply just ride out my days like waves! Some days I eat more and some days I don’t have time to eat… But TBH after months of doing this it just all works it’s self out! And If I notice I’m a little fatter or bloated I pull back for a week or two… Vis versa with feeling a little lean or tired!

Same goes with steps too! Keep these high and low depending on your day.


So is it difficult! I wouldn’t say it’s difficult, but it can be challenging and require some effort.


So simply ask yourself this:

- Do I want to make little sacrifices to sustain a lean physique all year round or do I prefer to be a little out of conditioned with little to no sacrifices!

Both are great choices but at the end of the day it’s going to come down to you and what you want to achieve!
